Master Gardeners 2006The Utah State University/Washington County Extension Service will be holding a Master Gardener class beginning in January. The class will be held each Wednesday afternoon from 3-5 pm beginning January 25, 2006. Students will receive 20 hours of instruction. Master Gardeners is a nationally recognized program that is conducted by land grant universities all over the country. Students will be taught basic horticulture, entomology, pathology and how to relate what they have learned to solve horticulture problems. Information will be presented about local soils, native plants and recommended plant materials for the area. General fruit and vegetable production will also be taught as well as lawn care. Master Gardeners who complete the course are expected to return some service to the community. Although it is expected that participants will help educate other citizens concerning horticulture, it is not mandatory. Opportunities for service include talking to church and civic clubs, conducting plant clinics, working on community garden projects and answering horticulture related questions. Registration fees for the class will be $80 per person. Once class begins, the fee is not refundable. A minimum of 10 students is needed to hold the class. Each student will receive a Master Gardener notebook and numerous handouts. Those who complete the class will receive a certificate. Classes will be held at Plant World Nursery located at 1335 South Dixie Drive. If you are interested please call 652-5815 or 652-5812.
